Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the site... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
